5 MINUTES OF YOUR LIFE CAN SAVE SOMEONE ELSE'S - BRAKE

Each year an estimated 3.500 people die as a result of road traffic accidents and over 1.800 children aged 9 - 13 are killed or seriously injured in road traffic accidents.
On May 23rd the British Red Cross launched its Road Safety and First Aid Campaign as part of a Europe-wide road safety campaign. It hopes to persuade people to take some time (approx. 5 minutes) to learn what to do in case you witness a road accident.
Tom Brake said;
"By taking just 5 minutes to learn about first aid and road safety, you might save someone's life. Knowing how to respond in case you witness a road accident can make the difference between life and death for the people involved."
Tom Brake MP is pictured with Joe Mulligan, First Aid Specialist Advisor for the British Red Cross, during a First Aid demonstration session in Parliament on Tuesday 24th May when the Red Cross highlighted the aims of its European Road Safety Campaign. The campaign message, supported by Toyota, is 'Don't be a bystander: Be Someone' - learn first aid and be able to respond at a road accident. Research shows that 57% of deaths caused by road accidents happen in the first few minutes after a crash before the emergency services arrive but up to 85% of these deaths could be prevented if first aid was given.

1. Stop! You can help
2. Stay safe and keep calm
Signal to other road users that there has been an accident
Do not move the casualty unnecessarily
3. Keep the casualty breathing
Tilt the head back
Lift the chin
Do CPR if necessary and you know how
4. Stop bleeding
Apply pressure and raise the wound
5. Call 999
Give the location
Give the number and condition of people involved
