Tom Brake MP, Lib Dem Olympics Spokesman challenged Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell MP at Olympics Questions on Monday to boost the number of local jobs, apprenticeships and training places available for local people in the Olympic Park.
After asking a question to the Minister about whether she regretted that the proportion of local people employed on the Olympic site has dropped by 3%, and what action she will take to redress this problem, the Minister stated that the total number working on the site had risen and commented on the work of the five Olympic Boroughs saying, '… and in everything they do as part of the Olympics, they are a powerful argument against the hatred and racism of the BNP.'
Tom Brake said,
'The significant rise in the number of people voting for the BNP is disturbing. One of the best ways of tackling this problem is to ensure that apprenticeships, training and real jobs are widely available to local people.'
'I believe that the Olympics are a unique opportunity to help a large number of young people to learn the skills and trades that could help them throughout their life.'
