Brake Determined To Keep Hospital On Track

Last week, Sutton & Merton PCT gave their endorsement to the St. Helier Hospital development plan. This will now be submitted to the Department of Health for approval. However, even DoH approval may not guarantee the complete success of the project - questions remain around NHS London's commitment. Tom Brake MP is working to overcome these obstacles and clear the path to a better St. Helier.
Mr. Brake (who has been fighting for the hospital's future for almost a decade) said: "That the PCT has endorsed the hospital's future is an enormous step forwards, but the struggle isn't over yet. The money invested in this hospital has to go towards St. Helier, to ensure it can provide the best care and the best facilities - I have contacted Sir Richard Sykes, Chairman of NHS London, to ensure that this remains the top priority."
Sir Richard, a pharmaceuticals expert and noted biochemist, is at the helm of the newly-merged regional NHS London management. The new regions carry directives that could potentially sideline St. Helier's funding and development.
"Certain concerns remain," said Mr. Brake, "The recession has left a deficit in the cost of redeveloping the hospital - an estimated £7million - and there is a chance that the larger South West London region will not prioritise St. Helier in its works programme. I have called on Sir Richard to focus on the redevelopment. St. Helier is our victory and our hospital. I am determined to see these vital works given full justice, and I hope he will commit himself to filling the deficit."
