Proposed Government Budget Cuts Threaten Freedom Pass
The Labour Government has secretly announced proposals to cut funding for the popular Freedom Pass; the scheme that gives old people and disabled residents free travel across London.
The government plans to seize £50million from London to shore up funding gaps in other parts of England left by an unwieldy national transport scheme.
Local MP Tom Brake said: "Other parts of the country already receive 100% of the costs of the free travel scheme. Here local council tax payers pay a third. These government cuts would reduce that support to 50%. This is an underhand and deeply unfair move."
"The demand on all local council tax payers will be an extra £18 per year, a levy imposed purely to cover another slight of hand by the government.
"Londoners already pay more than anybody else for a transport system that is, at best, flawed - TfL has cut our N213 bus, now the government wants to take away transport from the disabled and elderly. It's time to fight back."
Tom has put together a petition challenging the cuts, which has already gathered several hundred signatures. You can add your voice at tombrake.co.uk/petitions
