Local MP Tom Brake celebrated Sutton's re-awarded status as a fairtrade borough with a trip to a local fairtrade café, Roast and Ground on Carshalton High Street, last Friday.
The London Borough of Sutton was awarded fairtrade borough status in March 2007. In order to become a fairtrade borough Sutton Council had to pass a resolution supporting fairtrade and agree to serve fair-trade products in its meetings and in its offices and canteens. In the borough there also needed to be at least two fairtrade products available from 36 retailers and 18 catering outlets.
The Sutton fairtrade steering group was originally led by the Council, but the group is now community led. It includes representatives from local businesses, voluntary groups, churches, schools and the Council. The group meets every six weeks, and welcomes anyone who is interested to come along and become involved if they wish.
Speaking about Sutton's status as a fairtrade borough, Tom said 'Sutton is one of 20 fairtrade London boroughs and later this month London will become the world's largest fairtrade city. This means that Londoners will never have to travel far to find fairtrade products in a café or shop in their city'
Tom went onto say 'Roast and Ground in a great example of this. It is a local, family run fairtrade café right in the heart of Carshalton.'
