Yesterday in Parliament local MP Tom Brake questioned the government on the opportunities for volunteers at the 2012 Olympic Games.
Tom told the Government's Olympic's spokesman Tessa Jowell that 250,000 people have already volunteered and asked what the Government plans to do to ensure that people are given volunteering opportunities immediately.
Tessa Jowell agreed with Tom that 'There is a tremendous enthusiasm for people giving their time as part of the Olympics, not only in London but around the country.' She went on to tell him that 'We want to ensure that that energy and that will to give time, motivated by the Olympics, is fully utilised in a variety of ways, and we will make announcements about that at the beginning of next year.'
Speaking after his question Tom said, 'People from all parts of London, and across the country, want to get involved in the Games and help make London 2012 truly great. Volunteering is a fantastic way for people in Carshalton and Wallington to help ensure that the Games run smoothly and successfully. The government must strike while the iron is hot and put volunteers in touch with local organisations immediately. '
'There are many ways volunteers can help and I would encourage local people to find out more by visiting the London 2012 website.'
