Figures released this week show how the recession is affecting the number of local people out of work and seeking employment.
The total number of those claiming Job Seekers Allowance in London Borough of Sutton has risen by nearly 58% since 2006 but in Carshalton and Wallington the numbers have increased by over 61%.
Worryingly nearly thirty percent of those now claiming Job Seekers Allowance in Sutton are aged between 18-24, higher than the London average for this age range.
Now local MP Tom Brake is calling on the Government to do more to help tackle youth unemployment. Commenting on these figures Tom said 'Young people here in Carshalton and Wallington have been hit hard by this recession, just like they have been across the country. What they really need now is encouragement, support and practical help to improve their skills and enhance their work readiness.'
Tom continued, 'The Government need to do more to keep young people within reach of the job market by helping them to improve their skills and gain work experience. At present only young people from better-off families can afford to build up their experience of work. Liberal Democrat proposals would provide financial aid to young people carrying out work experience and internships meaning that up to 800,000 young people from all backgrounds will be able to take these opportunities.'
