A frank discussion with the Brazilian Ambassador has firmly shoved the distressing case of Neil Juwaheer, who died in police custody in Brazil, back into the hands of the British Government.
Tom Brake MP for Carshalton and Wallington who met the Ambassador on Thursday said, "The Ambassador was very frank in setting out the UK Government's responsibilities towards the Juwaheer family. I am now seeking an urgent meeting with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to discuss the support that the FCO should be providing. I have also asked the UK Government to clarify staffing levels within the UK Brazilian Embassy so I can establish how many diplomatic staff are available to assist UK citizens victims of crime abroad compared, for instance, to those who might be working on climate change."
Mr Brake added, "It is time the Juwaheers got the backing they deserve. They shouldn't be forced to take on the tragic case of their son's death without UK Government help."
Mr Juwaheer died in police custody in July 2007. An independent investigation found there was evidence that Mr Juwaheer had been the victim of repeated assaults leading to head trauma.
