Tom Brake MP - Representing Carshalton and Wallington in Parliament since 1997

Your High - No Thanks

11.48.46am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 9th May 2008

Tom Brake MP for Carshalton and Wallington has taken residents' anger at the planned opening of a new shop - Your High - in Stafford Road, Wallington, right to the top.

In a letter to the Home Secretary, the Rt. Hon Jacqui Smith, Tom Brake has challenged the Home Secretary to explain why it is legal for a shop to sell products which realistically can only be used in the production or consumption of an illegal drug.

Tom Brake said, "The Government likes to portray itself as being tough on drugs, yet there would appear to be nothing the police or the Council can do to stop a shop opening which intends retailing cannabis paraphernalia. This is madness."

The shop was due to open on the 9th May 2008, although when Mr Brake visited the shop to express anger at the shop-owner's plans the doors were still firmly locked.
