TOM BRAKE DEMANDS ACTION IN ROBBIE HUGHES' CASE7.48.17pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 24th Oct 2008 On Tuesday, Tom Brake, Liberal Democrat MP for Carshalton and Wallington tabled Early Day Motion (EDM) 2319 to the House of Commons to raise support for Robbie Hughes who was brutally assaulted whilst on holiday in Crete and for his Mum's campaign for better support and advice for families affected by violent crimes or serious accidents whilst abroad. The EDM noted, in part, that the alleged perpetrators of the assaults were allowed to return to the UK and have not yet been charged with any crime. Although the EDM was tabled only on Wednesday, two other MPs have already added their support. Tom has taken up the case on behalf of Robbie's mother Margaret, who lives in Wallington. 'We must call upon the British and Greek authorities to ensure that a serious miscarriage of justice does not occur,' commented Tom Brake MP. 'The Hughes family have already suffered enough without watching their son's attackers walk free.' The text of the EDM is below That this House draws attention to the serious assault suffered by Robbie Hughes whilst on holiday in Crete; notes that the alleged perpetrators of the assault have been allowed to return to the UK; calls on the Greek authorities to pursue the case vigorously and the Greek and UK police to work closely together to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice; and commends Margaret Hughes for seeking to set up an effective support mechanism for families affected by violent crimes or serious accidents whilst abroad.
